Here are some money saving suggestions:
Appliances: Use Energy Star rated appliances. Use the smallest refrigerator that will meet your needs. Ensure that all appliances have sufficient air flow around them to keep the motors and compressors working efficiently. Only run washing machines and dish washers with a full load.
Cabinets and Flooring: Use locally manufactured cabinets and save on packaging, fuel and other shipping cost. Use renewable wood species like bamboo, and lyptus. Avoid flooring and insulation that contains formaldehyde and use flooring that contains cork, wheat straw or bamboo. You don’t have to sacrifice comfort or aesthetic appeal. If re-finishing floors insist on waterborne finishes.
Windows: Upgrade to energy efficient windows that are strategically placed to reduce your energy cost.
Paint: Use low or no VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) paint for good indoor air quality.
Water heaters: Gas is more efficient than electric. If your water heater is warm to the touch install a pre-fab insulation blanket. Instant hot water heaters are a good choice for your kitchen sink. Whole house on demand tank-less water heaters are available and a good long term investment.
Insulation: Check attic insulation. Should have a R-factor of 38 or higher. Crawl space foundation should be insulated. Floor insulation may save approximately 10% on heating
bills. Seal up cracks or holes in your foundation.
Lighting: Change your incandescent lamps to energy efficient CFL (compact florescent lamps) or LED (light emitting diodes) and save on your power bill.
Countertops: Glass, paper, rubber and linoleum are all recycled materials that can be used.
Fixtures: Upgrade toilets to 1.6 gal or dual flush toilets. Install new low-flow or touch fixtures and conserve water.
Maintenance: Replace heater filters regularly. Make sure attic fans are working and clean. Open foundation vents for the summer and close in fall. Clean often using natural cleaners like baking soda, salt & vinegar. They won’t hurt our environment.
Note: Use energy saving settings on your appliances and water heaters, if available.
